12 years ago, while poring over a deck of Tarot cards, Zoe Jakes was inspired to create a work of art as powerful as the cards themselves. House of Tarot soon became an experiment in ritual theater, represented by life-sized cards and the dancers as the actors within those cards. At times represented by the artistry of dance, and at times visceral performance art, the show is about the present moment, the beauty and ugliness of life, and seeing humanity in every moment.
Be a part of the journey of 1000 faces. Join House of Tarot and tell your story, the story of the audience, the story of the cards.
What is The House of Tarot Performance Project?
House of Tarot is a 5-day performance-intensive that will bring you deeper into your technique, performance skills, and theatricality. We begin each day with 3 hours of dance training, and then after lunch, we make the show!
This is so much more than just learning a choreography, you will be working deeply on transitions, audience connection, meaning behind movement, and working with a team to bring a production to life. You will be assigned 2 choreographies and 1 combo, and will be expected to learn them before arriving to the event, as when we get together we have so much to do! If you are ready to dive into the next level of artistry as a dancer, then this is your invitation.
Diving into the House of Tarot experience felt truly magical — being part of the show-creation process from the inside, dancing alongside such amazing performers, and learning from Zoe was an absolute gift. It sparked in me a deeper desire to dance and create, and beyond the artistry, it's a wonderful way to connect with talented, like-minded dancers. Absolutely recommend it!
'Full-licious!' — thoughtful, impactful, playful, and skillful all at once; I am forever thankful for this experience. Training with Zoe is the quickest way to align with your highest dancer self: spiritually stronger, physically empowered. In-person training truly is the secret sauce in a lifelong dance journey. Absolutely yes — I recommend it without hesitation!
I just keep coming back for more! Watching Zoe create each unique House of Tarot is an incredible education — every experience makes me a stronger dancer, a better performer, and a richer artist. The way Zoe shares her process in detail throughout the week gives you the space to reflect on your own artistry and grow in ways you didn't expect. Every dancer who has the opportunity to do a House of Tarot should seize it. You will laugh, cry, sweat, grow, and create lasting friendships and memories. Being part of Zoe's art will inspire your own for years to come.
House of Tarot impacted me on many levels at once — the physical and technical challenges pushed my limits, watching Zoe's creative mind at work was awe-inspiring (she is truly a visionary), and the sense of community that comes from creating something beautiful and weird together is unlike anything else. I came out with next-level spinning skills and a profound new appreciation for the love and labor that goes into putting on a dynamic show. It expanded my mental and physical abilities not only as a dancer, but as a person who wants to keep creating for the rest of their life. It was beyond inspiring.
House of Tarot was a life-changing experience that left me feeling in full alignment with my body, my energy, and my current place in life. It fueled my creativity and served as a powerful encouragement to keep dancing, performing, and producing original work. Learning the technical aspects of producing a show with so many moving parts was invaluable, the networking opportunities were plentiful, and the time spent with Zoe and her team was priceless. The training during the intensive alone is worth every bit of the investment.
